Christmas Greetings 2011 {Caleb ~ 7 Years, Part II)

Caleb is 7 this year and is attending second grade at PGS (grade school).  What a transition for everyone, including Mommy! J  After reading the book, “Why Christian Kids Rebel” by author, Dr. Tim Kimmel, (which I highly recommend!) I wrestled with the deep conviction I felt from God to send Caleb to public school this year instead of homeschooling him.  Can’t say it was only *one* factor that helped us decide...it was really a lot of things but it all boiled down to trusting God to lead us in the specific area concerning Caleb and his schooling for this year, allowing him some areas in life where he’d have to truly depend on the Lord *on his own* away from us in order to grow spiritually.  After all, God knows what Caleb will be when he grows up and what experiences he needs to grow closer to Him in order to grow into the man He has planned Him to be.  Letting go and letting God was really difficult for me in this area (he’s my first born little boy after all!! lol) but in the end I did let go and God has done great things in Caleb, and in our home both spiritually and otherwise.  God really used that book in many areas of my life as a wife, mother, and follower of Christ in general.  After a long summer of trying to compromise with the Lord, going back and forth with Him, and trying to prolong the inevitable – He showed me that it was also about my trust in Him.  He was simply asking me if I was I willing to prove that I trusted Him instead of saying,  “Yes, Lord, of course I trust you buuuuut not with that.” HA!  WOW.  Tim Kimmel mentions how we *say* God is BIG…but do our *actions* speak that we truly believe what we say about the Lord our God?  After realizing my sin and really truly admitting that Caleb and his schooling had turned into my "Isaac” and that I was sinfully keeping him from the altar and what God had for him this year I knew what I had to do.  What a HUGE weight off of my shoulders the moment I agreed with God and we drove straight through the night from vacation to register Caleb for second grade. A big thanks to Auntie LuAnn for walking with me for over an hour on the beach one night and lending me her ear and godly discernment.  She was key in helping me really sort out my thoughts, feelings, convictions, and emotions on this whole situation!  Ryan was and has been 50/50 on the boys' education (public or home school) seeing the pros and cons equally concerning Caleb at this point, and since I'm the one willing/convicted to take on the roll of "teacher" really told me that it was up to me.  Um...YIKES!!  I desperately needed his leading on this (an answer from God in the form of a neon sign the size of a billboard is always so much easier to follow, right? LOL) and wanted him to just tell me what I should do.  Didn't happen...and wasn't going to.  He was honestly 50/50 and told me it was up to me and how I was convicted.  God wasn't going to let me out of really hearing Him, listening, and *obeying* Him THAT easily. ;)  I'm so thankful that the Lord sends us people like LuAnn.  She was also key in helping me through the time right before Ryan I decided to part ways after courting for 6 mths and I decided to take make a convenant  w/ the Lord to not date for a whole year while growing spiritually etc.  That turned out extremely well so you could say I trust LuAnn’s discernment! :)

So, how is Caleb doing in public school you might be asking?  Thankfully God IS big enough to handle all the small things that go on when I’m not there (haha, DUH!).  Thankfully He is also merciful and forgiving and has allowed me to grow in this experience also. ♥ Caleb is doing very well academically and from the teacher’s report does well with his peers and school in general.   We are enjoying watching him grow and mature in various areas but I will admit, I miss him not being with us all day long!  He says school is okay/good but longs to be homeschooled again for various reasons, one being he really, really misses learning history!  This is exciting to me because I have really started to enjoy and actually love learning history since I’ve been teaching it to the boys.  Gaining a Biblical perspective of the happenings on this Earth chronologically from the beginning of time (Creation) until now has been amazing.  The classical education model has helped me to be able to facilitate this it has been a fun ride!  I still purchased the history portion of his more traditional home school curriculum thinking we could just do "extra" during the evenings etc. and he would still get that portion.  I was sorely and sadly mistaken.   The poor guy is exhausted when he gets home and by the time he decompresses by playing w/ Benjamin and reading what he wants for enjoyment, eats dinner, does his homework, bathes, etc. it is time for bed already.  We don’t know what next year holds yet but we are excited to see what God has planned for Caleb concerning his education.  We are confident He will reveal that to us and will be listening intently for that answer!  We are thankful we can take it year by year.

Caleb really took off running with reading in the spring of 2011 and is an avid reader to date.  Often times he can be found after school with a book (I happen to have a few laying around LOL) or one of daddy’s 20 plus year old Scrooge McDuck or Donald Duck comic books.  He also loves to read Garfield and books about World War I or any other interesting history book he can get his hands on.  T-ball w/ Benjamin was a huge hit and he is also enjoying Cub Scouts with some of his classmates from school twice a month.  Caleb’s favorite memory, from 2011 (other than farming w/ daddy, of course) was our family “beach vacation” to Myrtle Beach at the end of the summer and he says he thought the Peoria Ballet’s performance of “The Nutcracker” was just “okay” lol, even though he was completely mesmerized the whole time.  I was *so* excited to take especially him because I was in second grade the first time I experienced it up in the Chicago area and it was the most magical thing I had ever seen.  I actually dreamt about that ballet (that I was watching it, performing in it, etc.) for years after I saw it.  I guess w/ the different technology these days it is just different for our kiddos concerning "entertainment"...plus - he's a boy.  I had to chuckle when I heard another little boy behind us say he was tired of all the faeries LOL.  Our three boys did very well and sat with their eyes glued to the stage through the whole thing...well except for the bathroom breaks, of course.  Jeremiah was actually the best behaved if you can believe that!!  (Helps to sit front and center down on the main floor about seven rows back from the stage and go at 9:00 a.m. when they are rested, fed, and ready to pay attention.)  Here are the rest of the pics of our handsome little first born at 7 years (on Thanksgiving Day during our 8 min...no maybe it was 6 min long photo shoot after church at Gma and Gpa S's church HA!) We sure do love our sweet CR! XOXOXO ♥
